Parking space near the dome is limited,
so carpooling is strongly
encouraged. 8 or 10 vehicles can be accommodated. Large buses must be parked
in the main parking lot about 1/4 mile from the dome, where a Forest
Adventure Pass is required.
アクセシビリティー: The dome was built in
1908 and unfortunately offers no
access for those who cannot climb stairs.
どんなものが観えるの?
- The best objects for viewing are the moon, planets, globular clusters,
planetary nebulae, and colorful double stars. Galaxies are generally
disappointing except under ideal conditions because they are usually larger
than the telescope field of view and have low surface brightness.
- A list of good objects to view through the 60-inch telescope will be
provided, but visitors are welcome to bring a list of their own. The
operator and docent can assist in object selection. The telescope cannot be
pointed lower than 30 degrees above the horizon, or beyond 75 degrees or
?26 degrees declination.
背景: Mount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch
telescope was built in 1908 by
Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding provided by Andrew
Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went
on to complete the 100-inch telescope in 1918. Among the many important
discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in
1918 that, contrary to the then-accepted view, the sun is very far away from
the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. This historic telescope is now retired
from active scientific service and is among the largest in the world
regularly available for public viewing.

Additional 60-inch Telescope Information for the More Advanced Amateur
Astronomer:
- The telescope's primary mirror has a diameter of 60 inches.
- The telescope is a bent-Cassegrain reflector with a focal ratio of f/16
and focal length of 960 inches or 2438 cm.
- It is currently equipped with 4-inch diameter eyepieces of 100mm and 50mm
focal length. The 100 mm eyepiece produces a magnification of 240 and a true
field of view of 11 arc-minutes, and the 50mm has a magnification of 480 and
a true field of view of 6 arc-minutes. A 2-inch diameter eyepiece adapter is
available for those who wish to bring their own eyepieces.
